Arranged Marriage Success
Before analysis the reasons and success rate of arranged marriages it is very important to take into account the community which is taken as the subject of our study. For example, the number of arranged marriages in the United States is very low when compared to the number in countries like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan or China. |
On the other hand if one compares the divorce rates between the above Asian countries with the United States, it is nearly 50 percent. So there is only fifty percent chance that a marriage might sustain through the years in the States. Interestingly, in a country like India, the divorce rate is only 1.1 percent.
In India, more than two-thirds of marriages are arranged and have a very high success rate. However, one wonders if this statistics is enough to conclude the success of arranged marriages over love marriages.
The success rate of marriages has a lot to do with the socio-cultural background of the two people in the relationship. While women in the Indian society grow up in a very orthodox and male dominated society. Their counterparts in the American society are not so oppressed. So, when one is comparing success rates of marriages, one needs to compare the whole paradigm of the culture and social cultural backgrounds, economic status and beliefs along with the practiced religious rituals.
The success of a marital relationship according to marriage counselors and psychologist depends a whole lot on the compatibility between the two people involved. In the United States, men and women are treated equally, and they share marital responsibilities together. Their marriages do not work with the husbands dominating the wives. Rather both are equal partners who work together to make the marriage a success. So one is left to wonder if arranged marriages would work for the American population. Arranged marriages might work well in most Asian cultures and countries, but there is no surety they will be compatible to the American way of life.
Right now in the United States, the number of arranged marriages is practically neglible when compared to love marriages.
