Can You Refuse An Arranged Marriage ?
An arranged marriage proposals are never taken forward if the would-be bride and groom do not agree on the marriage. It would be correct to name a marriage between two non-consenting individuals as a forced marriage. So, we can comfortably say that if a marriage takes place between two individuals, who could not refuse the proposal, it is a forced marriage. |
This practice is not prevalent in the United States of America where arranged marriages itself are very few.
However, forced marriages or marriages by coercion are very prevalent in the Middle East, India, and Pakistan. In some cultures, the bride is not allowed to meet the groom until the wedding ceremony is completed. So, there is no opportunity for the girl to talk and spend time with her would-be-husband. Brides in these countries are always taken for granted, and marriages are taken to be merely an arrangement made by parents. This is a common feature in male dominated societies.
Though we find that arranged marriages take the consent of the woman and the man, forced marriages are often forced upon, threatened or even blackmailed by others. An arranged marriage typically gives a choice of saying yes or no to a marriage. There is no doubt that such marriages are a serious violation to human rights. But, the practice of arranged marriages is an age old phenomenon and has been successful in many countries and cultures.
Americans need to be aware of such cultural practices while choosing partners from other countries. If they are marrying someone from a country like India or China, then they can expect elaborate and complex rituals during the ceremony. Whereas, if they are marrying someone from orthodox countries like Saudi Arabia or Middle East, then they have to be particularly cautious about the cultural and marital practices in those countries. One needs to be aware and cautious about such practices so that they do not get into unpleasant and difficult situations after marriage.
