India is a country with diverse cultures and religions. There is a strong connection between culture and religion in the country. Marriage is a very important social institution, and the wedding ceremonies are elaborate with a lot of intricate preparations. |
With time, a lot of socio-cultural norms have changed in India. In today’s modern society, people’s views and outlook towards these cultural practices have also changed. Among the educated section, dating and love marriages are pretty prevalent. Inter-caste and inter-religious marriages have become common. But still the number of love marriages is less when compared to the number of arranged marriages which take place in the Indian society. Arranged marriages are mostly fixed by parents of the bride and the groom within their own community.
In every ten marriages in the Indian society, six to eight are arranged marriages. This is true for all the different Indian communities and religions. The reason for this being that most Indians are rigid and orthodox when it comes to the marriages, they are still not keen on seeing their children choosing their own marital partners. Since India is a patriarchal or male dominated society, the man always gets to choose his wife. A woman is given no choice in making a selection of her life partner.
In some Muslim communities, the women are not allowed to meet her husband before the wedding day. Arranged marriages give less freedom in selecting one’s husband or wife. The two individuals do not get to interact and understand each other before the marriage. Women in general, irrespective of community or cultural background, are more adjusting in nature and quickly adjust and adapt themselves in the new relationship. Women take care of their children and all the household chores. There is a large section of women who are financially dependent on their husband for everything in their lives.
