Whether one accepts it or not, consciously or unconsciously, we all go by first impressions. |
First impressions certainly form a vital part of judging someone’s personality or character. There are some who may disagree and opine that the first impression does not hold much significance, but it is a hard fact of life that the human mind tends to start analyzing an individual within moments of interaction, to be precise statistics suggest that first impressions are created in the first 30 seconds itself.
Research highlights that the various parameters of human communication include body values, expectations, sense organs, ability to speak and brain function. Therefore, all these elements play an important role in casting first impressions.
The human mind forms a picture of an individual, the second we come face to face with someone. Once the perception is formed in the mind, we tend to observe the minute details of the physical appearance such as the shape of the eyes or nose, the attire and dress sense. With this thought, the first impression about the person’s physicality and know-how of fashion trends is set. The next thing that automatically occurs in our mind is a comparison between the individual and us. We start estimating whether the person is better, lesser or equal to us in status, common sense, intelligence, appearance, articulation skills and maturity level.
The importance of first impression dates back to the evolutionary era wherein such feelings aided in figuring out whether the person was a friend or an enemy. With passage of time, the significance and relevance of first impressions have altered to a large extent. In contrast to the previous reasons of self defense, today first impression enables one to assess an individual’s educational background, status and style. In other words, one can say that first impressions help to judge an individual holistically. However, one cannot discount the fact that even today; there are times when the first impressions intuitively protect us against crime.
Despite the fact that it is almost impossible to overlook the first impression as it is a brain function, it is essential to understand that one should not attach too much importance to the same. Many a times, first impressions are incorrect and influenced by personal prejudice. It is necessary to work on creating an impressionable first impact as it lingers on the perceiver’s mind but at the same time, it is advisable not to write off someone owing to a poor first impression since each person deserves a second chance.
