Psychology Of First Impressions
Without any conscious effort, all human beings tend to form a first impression of someone whom we have just met. |
It is rather strange that even though we hardly know the person concerned, yet our mind starts forming an image of that person within the first 30 seconds of our first encounter. No matter how wrong these preliminary impressions may be, it is difficult to escape them. Forming a first impression of any individual whom we meet is not by habit; instead this is a preconditioned reaction of the brain. The functioning of the human brain helps in familiarizing an individual with the surroundings. It processes all information perceived by our sensory organs. In fact, the human brain is said to be immensely perceptive and takes into account every minor detail of one’s facial features. The sight and sound around us are picked up by the sense organs and the signal is passed on to the brain. These signals are then compared to the memories of the past experiences present in the cortex and limbic system of the brain. The interpretation of this signal plays a key role in forming the first impression. If the interpretation suggests familiarity on account of a previous interaction or similarity in characteristics with a well known acquaintance, then the perception moves into the ‘known zone’ and the first impression is generally positive. The more unfamiliar the characteristics; more negativity is reflected in the first impression. Many psychologists profess that first impressions are mostly impulsive and are influenced by very minute gestures such as the tone of the voice, mushy handshake, hunched postures and even the accessories worn by the person.
However, sometimes these first impressions can be far from the truth. If human beings are agile towards these stereotype evaluations of the mind, then probably the person in question has a better chance. It is necessary to go into the intricate details of a person’s history with respect to family, culture, education and character before passing a judgment. Therefore, we should make a deliberate attempt to oppose the first typical impression that typecasts a human being and utilize the most complicated part of the cortex to form a more humane and mature outlook.

Statistics On First Impressions
While some believe that it is the inner self that matters more than outward portrayal, statistics highlight otherwise. Statistics based on research reveal that the first impressions are largely affected by an individual’s image. It is said that in about the first 30 seconds of our encounter, the first impression is created. In fact, to be precise, there is ample research that supports the notion that the first impression is formed in the first 7 to 17 seconds itself. More..
