Studies On First Impressions

Over the years, several studies have been conducted on comprehending the psyche behind first impressions and their validity.

One such highly informative study known as ‘Half a Minute: Predicting Teaching Evaluations from Thin Slices of Behavior and Physical Attractiveness’ was carried out by Nalini Ambady and Robert Rosenthal. The study was published in the year 1993 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. This study involved 9 females at the undergraduate level. Each of them was made to watch a soundless video displaying 13 instructors in the classroom situation. Each video was in totality of 30 seconds, bifurcated into 3 segments of 10 seconds each. The first segment demonstrated 10 seconds of the beginning of the class, 10 seconds focused on the class in progress during the middle and the last 10 seconds illustrated the end of the class. After observing the 13 instructors carefully, the undergraduates were expected to evaluate the instructors encompassing 15 domains; some of them included characteristics such as competence, confidence, honesty, likeability, professionalism, warmth and dominance. The researchers thereafter compared these so called ‘thin slices’ with the assessment of many students who had studied under those very instructors for an entire semester.

To the utter amazement of the researchers, the results were quite similar. The holistic correspondence for the 15 domains was evaluated to be 0.76. The study also revealed that the correlation was higher with respect to the more apparent characteristics such as confidence, optimism and dominance at 0.82, 0.84, and 0.79 respectively; in contrast to the more intrinsic traits such as competence, professionalism and supportiveness, which were at 0.56, 0.56 and 0.55 respectively. Nevertheless, even these evaluations were decently high considering the fact that the videos were devoid of sound. A study was repeated on the similar lines, this time with high school teachers. The correlation was slightly lesser in this case at 0.68.

It is believed by many that only female students were selected for the study owing to the well asserted fact that the female gender has higher potential to decipher non-verbal cues. Also, these students were probably from the Harvard University, which signifies their level of intelligence and emotional sensitivity. Both these factors could be responsible for the promising results of the study. However, which ever way one looks at it, we cannot refute the fact that the study undoubtedly demonstrates the power of first impression.
