The first thing that can be a complete put off is bad hygiene. An unkempt look, bad body odor or breath tops the charts in casting a poor impression. Therefore, one must be particular about not only the clothing, but also use a subtle perfume to ensure freshness. Reaching late for a meeting marks a bad beginning. Lack of punctuality showcases attitude and irresponsibility of character. A confident personality is looked up by most people. Whether it is a relationship or organization, no one wants an under confident person who lacks belief in oneself. The body language is a significant give away in terms of one’s level of confidence. A sloppy posture, fiddling hands, avoiding eye contact, shaky voice and nervousness are prime hindrance to a good impression. The ‘I, me, myself’ syndrome is a definite move towards a bad impression. Talking constantly about oneself and leaving no time for the opposite party to speak reflects poor mannerisms. Listening with the aim of learning more about the other person always proves beneficial. Also one must stay clear of foul language, chewing gum or any other poor etiquette as they mar one’s impression immediately.
Wandering eyes or any other fidgety gestures demonstrate lack of interest and obviously take the meeting nowhere. To make a good impression, one has to offer complete attention. Another significant killer of first impression is overstepping one’s limitations. At times bad humor, going over board with gifts or complements, crossing the boundary with respect to intimacy or flirting and too much probing especially on personal issues can ruin one’s impression completely. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to keep one’s limitations in mind and never cross the line.
