The gay pride in San Francisco is officially known as San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride. It is also referred to as San Francisco Pride. It is a parade and celebration that is held each year in June in the city of San Francisco, US.

It is primarily held to celebrate the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. In addition, the people who support those rights also join in the festivities. This parade is considered to be the second largest one held in the state of California after the Rose Parade.

The first San Francisco Pride celebration was hosted in 1970 in the city. Thereafter, it was only from 1972 that the pride has been hosted every year. The parade has witnessed many name changes, but now it is known as San Francisco Pride. Each year, the theme of the parade is changed to highlight some event associated with the LGBT rights, culture and heritage. Based on the theme each year, a new logo and advertisements are designed.

The Rainbow flag which is associated with the gay community was actually designed for the parade held in 1978. It was designed by Gilbert Baker and the first flag had 8 stripes. However, the present Rainbow flag has only 6 stripes. This flag is hoisted and flown over Harvey Milk Plaza located in The Castro, which is where in the initial days the parade used to start from. Also, The Castro is a district in San Francisco which is considered to be the most popular gay neighborhoods in the world.

The parade initially used to last for two days, but now it a single day event that is hosted on a Sunday in the last weekend of July. It starts at around 10.30 in the morning from Market Street and thousands and thousands of people line the street to get a glimpse of the contingents that represent various gay groups and organizations. Usually, the parade lasts until 4 pm in the afternoon.
