Who Pays For The Honeymoon ?
Once the marriage date is has been finalized, the next most important task is planning for the wedding. |
This task can be extremely taxing; mentally, physically, emotionally and above all financially. The budget for the event is greatly influenced by the type of ceremony the two families opt for; formal, semi formal or informal.Many years ago, there were set traditions that demarked the financial domains of the bride and groom’s family. The expenditure of the bride’s family included the cost of decoration, music and food for the reception; accommodation for the guests, commuting and parking expenses; charges of the photographer, wedding stationery; catering for the bouquets of the bridesmaids; groom’s wedding band and gift; and above all the bride’s wedding gown, accessories and trousseau. On the other hand, the groom’s family was expected to finance the marriage license, the rehearsal dinner, the clergyman’s fee, the bride’s ring and wedding gift, the bride’s bouquet and corsage, the groom men’s gifts, ties, gloves and boutonnieres for the groom’s party and the honeymoon.
Traditionally, the bride and the groom were kept away from the financial pressures of the ceremony, which were completely borne by the respective families. However, with the changing trends, the status of this tradition has also altered. Most couples these days end up marrying much later in life in comparison to their parents. Today’s generation believes in self sustenance. By the time, one is ready to walk down the aisle, most brides and grooms are in a position to share the financial burden of their parents for the ceremony. The same goes for the honeymoon as well.
As on date, there are no rigid rules as to who finances the honeymoon. Since the bride has her hands full with other issues, the planning is more often done by the groom, of course with the approval of the bride. However, most often, the couple pitches in to share the expenses of their first holiday together. The change is certainly welcome because what better way that beginning one’s life with ‘togetherness’ in the true sense of the word.
