This age old tradition transformed after people forgot to pluck the berries while kissing. Even most of the people are unaware that the mistletoe develops on trees as a parasite, and does not grow as an independent plant rooted on the ground.
The mistletoe in Europe was instilled with religious importance by the Druids. It was also considered to have therapeutic powers and also some supernatural powers. The mistletoe with the tree of an oak was infrequent to come across. But once the druids found them growing, they would immediately assemble to perform a solemn ritual.
In order to make arrangements for feast under the oak, two white bulls, whose horns had never bound before, would be sacrificed. A priest in white gown would climb up the oak tree and cut the mistletoe with golden sickle. It was a firm belief that potion made using the mistletoe will make animals that are infertile fertile.
