Different countries and cultures have their own tradition of greeting each other when they meet, irrespective of the gender.


The misunderstanding of the culture can often lead to social faux pas or offending others around. That is why it would make sense to figure out the tradition of kissing in different cultures.Brazilians kiss on both cheeks without any consideration that they are meeting somebody for the first time or not. Other Latin Americans also have the same tradition of kissing. In fact, it is not unheard of people waiting in line in social gatherings to kiss the host and hostess.

The Dutch are known to kiss their friends and relatives three times. This is a custom and everyone follows it diligently. If you do not follow this practice, you might end up offending your Dutch friends.

Americans generally prefers shaking hands to kissing. However, people who know each other well may hug or embrace each other. Americans of Latin descent and Italian Americans kiss. In the US greeting involves touching. However, this practice is not followed in all countries. For instance, the traditional way of greeting in India is folding the palms together and wishing the person. There is no touching or kissing involved whatsoever.

In Islamic countries, a woman, who is greeting you, will never show her face or any part of body as she would be covered with a burqa. Also, the greeting would be through words and not via kissing or touching. However, men can kiss each other on the cheeks and also hug one another.

           Therefore, different traditions tell different stories about kissing and greeting. But when the people of two different cultures meet, there could be culture clash, which could offend some people. For example, a Bangladeshi would prefer to shake hands, while a Mexican would prefer to hug. This could lead to confusion if the two people meet in a social gathering.
