Usually, a kiss is considered to be a romantic gesture, but it is also be used as a sign of greeting and respect. Kissing traditions usually pass from one generation to the next, and that is how the tradition is kept alive in families.Receiving a guest reflects your social manners, and the moral valued inculcated in you. It also gives a first impression in the mind. On contrary to this, puckered brow, no eye contact and fake smile would make the guest feel unwelcome.
It is not necessary to kiss someone to show reverence, but following social norms is very important. It can be also a handshake, hug, bow, nod or nose rubbing, depending on which culture you come from. The main aim is to make the guest feel comfortable and welcome.

Kiss on one cheek, kiss on both cheeks, kiss three times on the cheeks is also a part of the kissing custom, and people follow one or the other. It is very common practice in Europe and Latin America, and also considered customary in Southern parts of Europe.

Kissing three times on alternate cheeks is necessary in Egypt, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, and The Netherlands. Kissing on both cheeks has is preferred by the Italians, while in Mexico one kiss is needed. In the Galapagos Islands, women kiss just on the right cheek, while in Oman, it is customary for men kiss each other on the nose after a warm handshake. In the French culture, many types of greetings are acceptable, depending on the location. For instance, in Provence, people usually kiss twice on the cheeks, while in Nantes, it is four times.
