What Is Leadership ?
The term ‘leadership’ is defined as the art of inspiring a group of people to act towards accomplishing a common goal. Or in other words, a leader is the inspiration and director of the action. There are four theories as per which the definition of leadership alters; the trait theory, behavioral theory, contingency theory and transformational theory. |
A leader possesses a personality and attributes that create the desire amongst others to follow his or her course. A leader can be selected by virtue of inheritance such as kings, nobles or heads of family businesses; while some are elected such as in the case of politicians, chairman or governor.
Leadership is not a scientific procedure. In fact, it is an escapade since one is never definite of reaching the assigned goal. With leadership comes enormous responsibility. There are immense expectations linked to this portfolio. Leadership forms an extremely cardinal factor in any organizational set up. The sub sets of leadership are the job and the group. The first one implies the task in hand and the second highlights the people involved in the attainment of the task.
Neither are there any set rules for able leadership nor is it a magical skill. This talent alters with three variables; the leader, the group and the situation. Firstly, leadership varies as per the leader who could be autocratic, bureaucratic, democratic or delegative in his or her style of work. Secondly, the group members also play a decisive factor in this attribute. Thirdly, leadership changes with diversity in circumstances. However, there a few significant characteristics that can take a leader ahead in popularity and productivity.
Some people believe that leadership is an inherent quality, which cannot be inculcated. While many opine that leaders are not born but are created. It is true that leadership is an art that everyone cannot gain expertise at. However, like many other attributes, it is possible to learn the knack of this skill as well.
Many people consider the word ‘boss’ synonymous to the term ‘leader’. On the contrary, a leader is probably an explorer of the human psyche. He or she acquires the insight to his team members, which is a must to get work done out of others. The secret of positive leadership lies in working in unison with the employees. An effective leader must be aware of his or her potential and be vigilant to the requirements of his group members.
