Motivation And Emotion In Psychology

The word ‘motive’ originates from the Latin word ‘motus’, which means ‘to move’ and the word ‘emotion’ is taken from a word of the same language, ‘emotus’ denoting ‘to stir up’. To acquire an insight to the phenomenon of motivation is in fact the study of human psychology. Motivation is the human characteristic that lies behind all forms of behavior.

It clarifies why a person makes certain decisions in life or chooses a particular work over another? Motivation thus outlines what stimulates, influences and energizes behavior.

Emotion is defined as the mental and physiological state related to a wide variety of feelings, thoughts and behavior. Emotions are subjective in nature and vary with parameters such as temperament, personality and disposition. Motivation is very closely associated to emotion. Anything that motivates a person also has to have a strong emotional bond with him or her internally. Events that inspire strong positive or negative emotions are events that motivate us.

The human mind can be bifurcate into three dimensions namely; ‘cognitive’ that denotes thinking, ‘affect’ that signifies feelings and ‘conation’, which means willing. Emotion falls under the category of affect and motivation can be referred as the synonym of conation.

The phenomenon of motivation incorporates various dynamics that include relations between internal and external factors, intuition and knowledge. Similarly, emotion also includes the components of cognitive appraisals, bodily reactions, action tendencies, and expressive movements. Out of these aspects appraisal casts the greatest influence on emotion and subsequently impacts motivation.

Motivation and emotion both, have more of energy as their foundation rather than information. Both these aspects of human psychology vary in relation to individual and the surroundings. Emotion reflects how a specific circumstance makes an individual feel, whereas motivation exemplifies the reaction of the person with respect to the circumstance. This point of view itself paves way for a co-relation between emotion and motivation as it the feeling due to which a particular action takes place.

Therefore, one can state that emotion is the precursor for motivation. The emotional bent of mind of a human being increases or decreases the motivation towards a particular action. Correspondingly, in cases where the desired objective is attained, one reacts positively but in case of failure the emotion has a negative streak. Human mind is frequently motivated to perform actions that offer a gratifying experience.
