The Role Of Brain Function In Motivation
Life would probably come to stand still if there was no driving force. Motivation is that driving force that activates an individual towards a goal-oriented conduct even when things are not really going right. In specific terms, motivation can be defined as the process that accounts for an individual’s intensity direction and persistence of effort towards attaining a goal. |
Motivation can be provided in numerous ways, internally and externally. Not only human beings, but animals also require a motivating factor to carry out certain errands. Research has revealed that the brain plays a very vital role in motivation. Specific centers of the brain can give you the ‘feel good factor’ that can take you a step further in the accomplishment of your goals!
The neurotransmitter dopamine is influenced by motivation. Reward in the form of motivation is key factor for this sway of mind. The level of dopamine is directly proportional to the reward factor. The level increases if there is lure of a reward and decreases in the absence of one. Each time an incentive is provided which seems attractive to an individual, it works as a stimulus for the release of dopamine, which in turn makes the person strive harder towards the objective.
Serotonin is another neurotransmitter that has a say in motivation. Serotonin is released at the base of the brain called raphe nucle, the axons of which spread out till the nucleus accumbens. This is the area of the brain that is concerned with the management of motivation with respect to aspects such as alcohol and drug abuse.
The most critical site of motivation control is the anterior cingulated gyrus. This is a segment of the cortex and limbic system. Experts believe that the anterior cingulated gyrus is the chief area concerning the issue as it is situated adjacent to the motor cortex and is finely positioned with the frontal cortex and the limbic system.
The prefrontal cortex also has a function in the motivating aspects of human life. Any injury to the prefrontal cortex can lead to enormous callous responses in human conduct. Attitude can develop negative dimensions despite the functioning of cognitive skills. Such behavioral aspects include feeling aimless, muddled and indigent.
Science has undoubtedly proved today that the brain, motivation and the resulting work attitude are all co-related. Therefore, if one needs to achieve success, motivating the people concerned is pertinent. Unfortunately, motivation is not for sale in the market. However, with apposite proficiency it can be generated and soon you will be touching the sky with glory!
