Domestic Violence Self Esteem
Domestic violence is a growing concern all over the world. Reports highlight that in America, 90 percent cases of partner violence showcase women at the receiving end of abuse by their intimate partners. Unfortunately, domestic violence does not affect only the two people involved in the act. The psychological impact stretches its domain to the children viewing the scenario as well. |
It is believed that from 3.3 million to 10 million children are exposed to domestic violence every year.Physical injury may seem as the obvious consequence of domestic violence. However, the bigger damage is caused to one’s inner self. The psychology of the person abused undergoes drastic negative impact that results in low self-worth. This mental state is reflected in the children witnessing the same as well. Some of the symptoms experienced by an individual who is abused and one who is part of the set up include depression, anxiety, lack of sleep, changes in appetite, social incompetence and emotional numbing. Children in particular reflect aggressive behavior, lack of concentration and poor academic performance. A combination of all these symptoms leads to low self-esteem.
Some theories project that whether low self esteem is a cause or consequence of domestic violence is a debatable issue. There are some extremely successful professionals who also suffer from domestic violence. Surprisingly these individuals belong to the so called high end of society, are well educated and take home a handsomer six figure pay package. It is astonishing how even this section of society takes abuse hands down from their partners.
Psychologists state that such individuals show ‘conditioned disassociation’. This term displays how the person in a certain specific set up or with a specific individual grows to lose his or her self-worth. The abusing partner weakens the ‘internalized personal perception’ of the person being abused. In due course of time, the abused assesses himself or herself as per the judgment of the partner. Due to this low self appraisal offered by the abuser, the abused partner develops low self esteem and loses the courage to retaliate to the domestic violence.
Interestingly, in situations detached from this abusive partner, the individuals may leave the internalized personal perception and revive their lost self-esteem. However, this phase is temporary and reverses in the presence of the abusive partner again. The only way to deal with this is to find ways to alter this self perception altogether. Only thereafter will the individual gather the conviction and self-confidence to oppose domestic violence and begin life afresh.
